Now that we can see the Z4 Concept is all its glory, all we can really say is WOW! Talk about beautiful. We’re talking optimized proportions, aggressive styling, sharp lines, and an attitude that you can only get from a Bimmer. Just look at the massive air intakes up front and those wide kidney grilles.

The angular headlights at a bit of style too, as do the sharp lines in the good. From the right angle, one could argue that it shares its face with that of a shark with a wide-open mouth and an attitude problem.

The chrome exhaust tips in the corner are elegant yet functional while the color of the insert around them makes them appear to float freely in the right light. Needless to say, this is one attractive exterior package. On the inside, the Z4 concept is equally as attractive and comes with a unique two-tone appearance like we’ve never seen. You could almost call the interior two-faced with the way the black and orange Alcantara meet in such a strange fashion in the center of the dash. The seats are also different colors with the driver’s seat being black and the passenger seat being orange. There are some design cues here that follow BMW’s current styling language, but there are also some features that stand out and grab your attention. At a quick glance, it almost looks as if the touch-screen display in the center stack is actually embedded inside the dash, but in this case, things just blend together well.

The screen is a floating unit that’s actually taller on the driver’s side than on the passenger side. One has to wonder how this would affect the overall display of the built-in operating system, but it is quite stylish. A simple but attractive digital instrument cluster sits ahead of the steering wheel and offers up just basic information from four dials. All other information will be displayed on the hexagonal screen in the center. The side spokes are more for looks than anything as they fall short of reaching the hub by just over an inch, which somehow accents the flat portions at the top and bottom of the steering wheel. The aluminum pedals match the aluminum and chrome trip throughout the cabin while the white backlighting of all audio, HVAC, and shifter controls stands out nicely against the surrounding blackness. As seen from a bird’s eye view, the center console gets the two-tone treatment as well, while the seats are sharply defined via aggressive and deliberate stitching.

They look not only supportive but comfortable as well. As expected, there’s no rear seat to speak of, and there would be chaos from purists if there was. There is a bit of storage space in the center, however, so this could provide a bit of cargo room for smaller items.

Now, with all of this in mind, the truth is that this is just a design study. It gives us a basic idea of what we’ll see when the camo comes off the production model seen in the spy shots below, but it’s not likely that a lot of what you see here will shift into production form.

It production model could get the digital instrument cluster and new infotainment screen, and it could even see those nice seats and general interior design. It will have a soft-top roof, however, to save weight and the exterior design will probably be slightly toned down. 1 – The Day Before the Rest of Your Life. Over the last year and a half, we’ve seen the upcoming BMW Z4 at least eight times as it puts in work and moves a little closer to production. And, since we can go all the way back to January of 2016, some are saying that the BMW Roadster that debuts tomorrow will be the production model while claim it’s just a concept. The truth is, we really don’t know, but it wouldn’t make sense to release a concept if the next-gen Z4 was right around the corner.

If nothing else, it will be a close-to-production-ready example that will change very little between now and the production model’s debut. With that in mind, let’s take a good look at this teaser – it’s more than generous for a teaser and shows us enough that it’s quite surprising it comes from within the bowels of BMW. First off, the photo is very high contrast, which is one way to help conceal certain features, but really it’s more there to emphasize the weird fake smoke that blocks a portion of the image.

First off, BMW’s new Roadster (or concept) will be very angular, from the shape of the kidney grilles to the headlight LEDs to the wild-looking side profile. Even the side view mirrors and wheels have exceptionally sharp edges which is really quite a nice change from typical BMW design. As you can see, the rear haunches are quite muscular while the front it is more toned down, leading into the side profile.

The headlights feature a staggered layout while the kidney grilles are wider and thinner than ever before. As a reminder, the Z4 will likely ditch the heavy hardtop and make good use of a canvass top instead – a feature that will change from the last-gen model and will help lighten things up a bit which is good all of the way around. It has also been reported that it will be offered with a number of different engines, including a 2.0-liter four-cylinder (the typical unit from most low-end BMW’s I’m sure) and a 3.0-liter that is, of course, and inline-six. It should be the B58 engine, which currently delivers upward of 335 ponies in the And, because it’s a German car, it will reportedly be offered with a six-speed manual – something that it’s counterpart won’t have. But, this baby, be it a concept or a production model debuts in less than 24 hours from the time of this writing, so stay tuned for updates in the near future.

BMW is recalling a whopping one million vehicles in North America over two separate issues involving fire risks. Both recalls include cars produced from 2006 to the 2011 model years.

One recall covers 670,000 3 Series models from 2006 to 2011 model years, while the second recall is issued for 740,000 cars from 2007 to 2011 model years. The latter includes the 128i, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, X5, and Z4 models. Although these figures amount to more than 1.4 million units, BMW says the recalls overlap and cover about one million examples. Nearly all cars have been sold in the United States, while about 15,000 are from Canada.

The recalls may expand to other countries in the future, but no specific announcement has been made as of this writing. The first recall for the 3 Series models only will address a wiring issue for heating and air conditioning system. According to the company’s report for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the systems may overheat and could increase the risk of a fire in the car. Has reportedly been monitoring the issue since 2008 and has made some improvements in 2011, but some incidents from 2015 and 2016, which led to injuries, prompted a mass recall. The second recall is about a valve heater issue that may cause damage to the engine compartment. No injuries or crashes related to this problem have been reported so far.

On the contrary, Group Australia CEO Marc Werner told Car Advice that both the design and driving characteristics of the Z4 will be completely different from the Supra. Werner’s comments shouldn’t come as a surprise because the Z4 and the Supra theoretically don’t belong in the same segment, despite sharing a platform. The BMW sports car is expected to cater to customers who prefer premium sports cars whereas the Supra will be catered more to the masses. That’s not to say that one is going to be inferior to the other because, despite the prestige of carrying a Bimmer badge, the Z4 will actually feature less power than the Supra, at least if rumors of the Toyota’s output are proven true.

It’s been reported that the Z4 will feature a choice of either four-cylinder or six-cylinder engines with power outputs ranging from 194 horsepower to all the way to north of 300 horsepower for the range-topping Z4 M40i. ON the other hand, rumors have swirled that the Supra will have in excess of 400 horsepower at its disposal so evidently, BMW and are going vastly different paths on how it’s preparing their respective sports cars. The designs and power levels of both cars will be different, so it follows that the resulting driving experience will be different too. Either way, it’s inevitable that we’ll see both the Z4 and Supra get compared to each other on account of their shared history. Not that it’s going to make a difference because, in the end, both cars should have no issues inspiring loyalty from their fans, independent on how the other one is received.

BMW essentially struck gold in the compact, two-seater market when it released the Z4 back in 2003. It featured a sporty exterior, with potent, naturally aspired engines, and could be had as a soft-top convertible or in coupe form.

That first generation lasted until 2009, but before the first-gen made its exit BMW was able to introduce a Z4 M in both forms with performance credentials good enough to get the little car that could up to 60 mph in as little as 4.8 seconds if you knew how to shift it right. The second-gen came to be in 2009 and, while most of the engine choices were naturally aspirated, one was offered with turbocharged goodness. Within a couple of years, the entire drivetrain lineup went turbo, and BMW hasn’t looked back since. The second-generation model lasted from 2009 to 2016 and, ever since its discontinuance, fans and purists everywhere have begged for the third-gen model – an all-new roadster that’s due for the 2018 model year and has been caught many times testing out in public over the last two years. At the kickoff of Monterey Car Week, decided to release the Concept Z4, a wild interpretation of the upcoming roadster and something that at least gives us a little hint as to where BMW is going with the third-gen model. As is the usual case with concepts, this car isn’t a firm representation of what we’ll see. For instance, it has no roof or, at the very least, has a Targa-style top.

The exterior design is quite bold and features stout overhangs with crisp lines and a style that you could only get from BMW. There’s no word on what might be lurking under the hood, but BMW claims the Concept Z4 is an “all-out driving machine” that is stripped down to the bare essentials. With that said, let’s take a good look at the concept and talk more about it! Updated: We added a series of new images taken during the concept’s presentation at the 2017 Monterey Car Week.

The BMW Z4 Concept has finally arrived, and boy, the long wait for the concept ended up being worth it and then some. It’s just too bad the excitement surrounding the Z4 Concept’s debut will likely lead to a little bit of disappointment once the production model arrives.

Though nothing has been finalized as far as what the production concept is going to look like, it would be safe to say that it won’t look exactly like the concept. That’s a shame because the Z4 Concept is all sorts of beautiful. I’m not going deep on the design characteristics of Bimmer’s new roadster because my colleague Robert Moore already did that. What I can add to that though is highlight BMW’s decision to pivot from its current design language and showcase a new style that we’re going to see a lot more of in the coming years, not just with the production version of the Z4.

The concept’s aesthetics speak to what we can expect from the German automaker moving forward. And while certain design elements of the car can be traced to what Bimmer’s already doing with its existing lineup of vehicles, some features like the massive intakes, aggressive body lines, and the roll bars behind the front seats are all fresh to.

Could these design features find their way in the production version of the car? Quite frankly, it’s also a big day for the rest of us because the car that we’ve all been waiting years to be unveiled may finally make its debut, at least judging by the look of the teaser photo that Bimmer unveiled in its Facebook page over the weekend. We don’t see much of it, but it is visible enough that we can see the model being a roadster of some sort. It might be a roofless version of the 8 Series.

It might even be a new roadster iteration for the i8, possibly one with a Targa roof. We’re not hitching our bets on either model, though, because if this model is what we expect it to be, this is the BMW Z4 Concept.

We’re not jumping for joy this early, though, because BMW is known for its last-second swerves. But if you’ve been following news reports about the German automaker’s joint sports car development with, the old puzzle pieces are coming together to complete a rather interesting picture. For one, the size and shape of the sports car fit into what we believe the Z4 Concept is going to look like. Then there’s the scheduled debut, which has been set for August 17. That date also happens to be a few days before the 2017 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the event that’s been reported as the stage where the new Z4 Concept will be unveiled. A timetable on Toyota’s end is still unclear, but that’s no longer the case with BMW, which is planning to unveil the concept version of the new BMW Z4 at the Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance this coming August. I can try to convince you that I took the news in stride, but that won’t be true at all.

While I resisted on actually jumping for joy, I did let out a sigh of relief now that we’re about to get a good first look at the sports car that was born out of the German automaker’s partnership with its Japanese counterpart. For a while, we knew next to nothing about the BMW-Toyota partnership other than both companies were developing new sports cars with the help of the other. That status remained unchanged for a while, a testament to the level of secrecy that both companies agreed to as part of the working parameters in their partnership. But now that both cars are scheduled to be unveiled soon, we’re finally getting what we’ve all been waiting for. Make no mistake, the Pebble Beach-bound Concept will be the prelude to the actual production model, which itself is scheduled to start production in November 2018. Much was made about the BMW Z4’s end of production back in August 2016. At that time, many thought the Z4’s exit would pave the way for the sports car that’s jointly developed by BMW and to take its place. That car has long been rumored to take the name “Z5,” but now, a new report from Autoguide is putting those rumors to bed. Apparently, is not going with the Z5 name as we previously thought.

Instead, BMW Americas chief Ludwig Willisch told Autoguide the car will be called “Zprobably 4.” Wait, what? To be fair, Willisch didn’t explicitly say that the German automaker is all set on bringing back the Z4 name, but he did emphatically deny that the sports car will be called Z5.

That much, according to Willisch, has been put to rest. There’s no confirmation on that yet, and whether it sticks or not is still up to the brass over at Bavaria. In addition to the rather confusing Z4 name, Willisch did give us a hint on what kind of engine we can expect from the sports car, indicating that just because he refers to the car as the Z4, it doesn’t mean that the “4” in the nomenclature is an indication on how many cylinders the car will have. Fourteen years may not seem like a long time for a model’s entire production run, but for somewhat of an off-the-grain model like the, seven years is right around what you’d expect as a lifespan. Then again, the German automaker has given no indication of the Z4’s fate, which is why this report from one of the most plugged-in BMW-facing sites is pretty revealing.

According to Bimmer Today,, without too much of a fuss, ended the Z4’s production on August 22, 2016. The last example built was reportedly a Valencia Orange Metallic Z4 sDrive35is. There are those, myself included, who will say that the timing of the Z4’s discontinuation should have been expected, especially considering that the model’s successor, the Z5, is scheduled to hit dealerships and showrooms between late 2017 and early 2018.

Still, there’s also the belief that the Z4 deserved a more notable exit than the one it reportedly had. Not that it needed a parade of sorts, but with less impactful cars getting treatments of that kind, BMW could have done something to at least acknowledge that the Z4 was riding off into the sunset. To be fair, that ceremony could still happen if or when BMW addresses the Z4’s end of production. With the preparations for the Z5’s launch expected to heat up in the coming months, it would be in the German automaker’s best interest to give the departing sports car a final shout out. It deserves as much considering it was BMW’s only aesthetically inclined sports car before the i8 hit production in 2014.

In the early 2010s, there was a lot of news about a collaboration between Toyota and BMW to bring a set of new sports cars to the market. In short, it was news that was planning a successor for the and BMW was planning a successor for the, and both models would share the same architecture – the same story behind the Toyota 86 and the BRZ. It was later said that Toyota would build the new Supra alone, but would co-develop the next Z4 with BMW. Since then, we’ve seen the new sports car – dubbed the Z5 – testing under heavy camo, and we’ve seen what may have been a preview of the new Supra when Toyota debuted the 2014 Toyota FT-1 concept. Now, German news outlet Kleinezeitung has announced that both brand’s models will be built by independent vehicle manufacturer – the Austria-based plant that currently builds the G-Class,, and Paceman.

According to the German new outlet, the Z5 is set to go into production first, with the successor to the Supra to follow shortly thereafter. Furthermore, it was said that annual production would be somewhere around 60,000 units for each model. As of now, BMW has confirmed that it had plans to start building a new model at Magna’s plant in 2018 but had yet to disclose which model.

That said, it’s quite possible that the new Z5 will be the model that starts production in 2018. For now, the successor to the Supra remains unnamed, but expect it to start production in late 2018 or early 2019. Based on the spy shots of the Z5, we know that it will be a soft top roadster and will be rear-wheel drive. As for the Supra, we expect it to at least be a hybrid that uses technology from Toyota’s recent WEC developments. The proverbial cat is practically out of the bag for now, so stay tuned for more updates on the collaboration between BMW and Toyota.

Continue reading for the full story. Making a new sports car can be risky business, but Toyota seems to have found a loophole. After seeing a good deal of success with the FR-S/Subaru BRZ collaborative project, Toyota announced it was partnering with BMW to jointly create a duo of new hybrid performance vehicles, and thankfully, both automakers look like they will benefit from the other’s expertise. Dubbed the “Silk Road” project, details on the new cars have been closely guarded, with only a few tidbits leaking to the general public. However, is believed to be responsible for the chassis and ICE development, blessing the car with solid handling and an inline-six gasoline powerplant.

Meanwhile, will take up responsibilities for the electrification and fuel-cell development, which makes sense for a company that offers models like the Prius and Mirai. According to the Australian-based publication Motoring, the development is split into four parts: joint sports car development, fuel-cell technology, electrification technology and weight-saving technology. The platform will be derived from the 2015 due to its hybrid-drivetrain roots. Speculation includes the possibility of an aluminum space-frame chassis and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) body.

Toyota’s version of the new sports car will sit above the FR-S as a successor to the legendary 1993-1998 Toyota Supra, while the new Bimmer will replace the Z4 with a possible designation as the Z5. It was recently confirmed that development is currently underway. Unlike the 2013-2015 Scion FR-S and 2014-2015 BRZ, which are essentially the same car with slightly different styling and badges, it’s expected that the Toyota/BMW joint collaboration will spawn two very different looking cars.

The Z4 is the unsung sports car of BMW’s lineup. While the 2016 BMW M3 and 2015 BMW M4 snag all the current headlines, the 2014 quietly soldiers on without much hubbub.

The last time the Z4 had its limelight was in 2012 when swapped the Z’s smooth, naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder for a turbocharged four-cylinder in the base 28i car. Before that, it was the Z4’s heavy refresh into its second generation in 2009, which included a more mature look and the addition of the convertible hard top. Since then, not much has changed. Then again, not much needed to.

Even in 2015, the Z4 still holds true to the classic design of a proper drop-top sports car: engine in front, drive wheels in back, rearward-mounted cockpit, and a good power-to-weight ratio. These are the same principles that made the Z4’s predecessor a success – the Z3. I recently spent a week behind the wheel of the Z4 in the standard sDrive28i trim. And though it doesn’t directly compete, I couldn’t help compare the BMW to Mazda’s famed MX-5 Miata. Both offer a true roadster experience, though at very different price points and to different audiences. Nevertheless, the BMW fulfills the role of a great top-down driver.

Introduced for the 2013 American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the Z4 GTE replaced the successful M3 GT, which brought the team and manufacturers’ championships in 2010 and 2011.

Compared to the Z4 GT3 it is based on, the GTE sports a less sophisticated aerodynamic kit, with simpler rear wing and diffuser, although it is significantly wider. The modifications were to make the Z4 suitable for the ALMS, which merged with the Grand-Am Sports Car Series to form the United SportsCar Championship (USCC) in 2014. Following a competitive maiden season in 2013, the Z4 race car received a chassis update in 2014 and went on to score six podium finishes in the GTLM class of the USCC with Team RLL. BMW placed fourth in the manufacturer’s standing, below, and, but above. Having received a slightly revised aero package for 2015, the Z4 finished the 24 Hours of Daytona second in the GTLM class and fifth overall. With the 12 Hours of Sebring just around the corner, BMW unveiled a special livery for one of the two cars, to celebrate 40 years since winning the famed endurance race for the first time. The car in question will hit the track March 21st with Bill Auberlen, Dirk Werner, Augusto Farfus and Bruno Spengler behind the wheel.

To celebrate these key milestones in the company’s history in the U.S., announced it will join this weekend’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance with a series of events and historic vehicles, as well as special racing livery for the Z4 GTLM race car.

Arguably the main star of BMW’s anniversary party at the Ritz Carlton Amelia Island, the special Z4 GTLM will break cover wearing a livery inspired by the 3.0 CSL race cars of the mid-1970s. Even though the teaser only shows a covered Z4 between two classic racers, it’s safe to assume the livery will mirror the paint schemes of the 3.0 CSLs flanking it, meaning a white body with the traditional blue-purple-red stripes of the company’s M division. 1975 12 Hours of Sebring winners Brian Redman, Sam Posey, and Hans Stuck will be on hand for the unveiling of the car that will then travel to Sebring for this year’s 12 Hours endurance race. The BMW Z4 has been in a holding pattern since its newest generation arrived in 2009, and this looks to continue through the decade. This is not because so many people love it that BMW fears changing it. Instead, it’s because roadster sales have always been slow, and recently they have become even slower, thanks to an 11 percent slide in Europe and a 13 percent slide in the U.S.

Additionally, the emergence of China as one of the key automotive markets has further slowed things, as folks in China seem to prefer privacy when driving, something a roadster obviously doesn’t provide. Despite declining sales, BMW plans to continue offering a roadster, but its plans to release its Z4 replacement have been put on the back burner, as BMW’s chief engineer told Auto News that it hopes to have the Z4 successor in place by the end of the decade. The likely reason for the delay is that this will give the chance to share the development costs with Toyota, in accordance with the joint sports car agreement the two companies came to. So, if you were counting the days leading up to the release of the new BMW Z4, you may want to stop now, as it looks like we are in for quite a long ride. BMW appears to be in the process of turning the spotlight to its Z Series after a report by Motor.es suggests that the German company wants to reignite the lineup to create three new models wearing the 'Z' badge. According to the Motor.es report, is considering fielding an entire lineup of Z models, covering three separate units that will be differentiated from one another in some form or capacity.

The smallest of these new models is the Z1, which we haven’t seen since 1991. The new Z1, which will be built in both coupe and roadster versions, is expected to use BMW’s UKL1 platform, the same platform used by the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the new Cooper. This makes sense because it’s going to help Bimmer cut production costs knowing that it has a modular architecture that is versatile enough to tweak depending on the model using it. The new Z1 is also reportedly getting three- and four-cylinder engines to go with a front-wheel-drive system. Moving to the Z3, it appears that BMW is juggling with the idea of developing the sports car to be a direct competitor to the and Cayman. Like the Z1, the Z3 will also be offered as a coupe and a roadster and will be characterized by a lightweight design to take advantage of the bevy of powertrain options the company plans to give it, including three-, four-, and six-cylinder engines.

The other big news surrounding the new Z3 is that it will reportedly be built in collaboration with Toyota’s own development of the second-generation GT 86. We haven’t heard this news before so it definitely has us intrigued about the possibilities of the new GT 86 getting some form of input from BMW. Last but not least is the oft-rumored BMW Z5. It’s no secret that BMW wants a sports roadster to compete against the likes of the 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT. The Z5 could become that car. Motor.es touched on some rumors we discussed back in July 2014, including the joint development of the sports roadster by BMW and Toyota and the German’s plan to introduce the Z5 as a replacement model to the Z4.

Turns out, the Z5 will reportedly carry the same classic proportions attributed to the Z Series, including the long hood and the large headlamps that will be attached to the front kidney grille. The Z5 will also be offered as a coupe and roadster and will reportedly feature four- and six-cylinder engines with power numbers ranging from 270 horsepower to 400 horsepower. A top-of-the-line, 500-horsepower hybrid model is also part of BMW’s plans for the Z5. Most importantly, the BMW Z5 is the first car of the BMW-Toyota partnership that will hit the market, possibly around 2017. Click past the jump to read more about the future BMW Z models. Imagine this, you’re driving down a twisty, winding road, in a convertible BMW with the top down, wind in your hair and in your ears, and the sound ofnothing because you’re driving a hybrid.

Sounds pretty awful, right? Well don’t worry because isn’t making a hybrid convertible, at least until the i8 goes topless.

BMW has officially stated that six, inline cylinders will drive the upcoming Z4 replacement. This is good news.

The Bavarians have always made wonderful I-6 engines; with smooth, buttery powerbands and lovely, growling exhaust notes. The engine in question, code named B58, will be a 3.0-liter, turbocharged I-6 that will put out around 335 horsepower and 324 pound-feet of torque.

Combine that with an estimated curb weight of around 3,084 pounds, and you’ve got one hell of a convertible sports car. Rumor also has it that this car will be developed together with and its upcoming Supra replacement.

Based on the success of the Toyobaru twins and all of the success BMW’s had developing sports cars, I cannot see this car being anything other than fantastic. This is a whole new line of engines from BMW. It’s in the same “Efficient Dynamics” engine family that its newly released, 1.5-liter, three-cylinder and 2.0-liter. Four-cylinder engines are from. This engine is also rumored to debut in the upcoming 7 Series replacement, and should trickle down into the 3 Series and 5 Series cars shortly after. It’s also good to see Bimmer sticking with six-cylinder engines.

Many automakers have been ditching sixes for turbo-fed fours, and while the turbo fours pack quite a punch, they lack in emotion and excitement compared to sixes. So while the Z4 might eventually get the familiar 2.0-liter turbo four as well, it’s refreshing to see BMW also offer an I-6. Click past the jump to read more about the BMW Z4 successor.

The return of the Toyota Supra is inching closer and closer to reality. You probably can’t tell by reading this, but you can imagine us doing our happy dance now that more details about the sports car are coming to light.

MotorTrend has the latest on the Toyota-BMW collaboration and sources close to Toyota have told the auto site that the all-new Supra will be a plug-in hybrid. We’re not surprised about this news, especially in today’s world where hybrid technology has become universally embraced within the industry. MotorTrend’s sources also indicated that the new Supra will use a BMW-sourced, turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine.

This powertrain will then be combined with the Japanese automaker’s new super-conductor hybrid technology. This kind of setup isn’t exactly new to Toyota, as the company has already tinkered with a similar package on the Yaris Hybrid R Concept that was first introduced at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Even took it a step further when it used this system in the TS040 Hybrid race car at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last month. So what does this all mean for the new Supra? For one, it’s going to be vastly different from its predecessor, which featured a turbocharged, 3.0-liter engine the last time we saw it. That model was good for 320 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque. This time around, the new Supra’s hybrid engine is expected to be slightly more powerful, with an estimated output of somewhere north of 400 horsepower. The news about Toyota and BMW building cars together isn’t new, as the two companies finalized the partnership in January of 2013, but thanks to the Nikkei Asian Review, we’ve got some rumors as to what the two companies have been working on. Those plans revolve around the next-generation BMW Z4 and a revival of the famed Toyota Supra. The Nikkei reports the two cars will share the same platform, manufacturing processes, and parts procurements. The two sports cars, however, won’t be sharing the same body style and will be sold under their respective brands. What’s more, these two cars could debut as early as 2017. The report speculates whether Toyota would be able to adopt the same carbon-fiber-extensive construction style has recently adopted, citing cost as the limiting factor. However, with the falling cost of carbon fiber and its exploding popularity, the material might be within Toyota’s reach.

This is especially true for such a specialized sports car as the Supra. The Nikkei report lacks further juicy details about the partnership or its planed products, but news seems rather certain. The 2017 date is still tentative, but the possibility still remains. As far as powertrains, it’s anybody’s guess as to what will be found under hood. Perhaps BMW will provide a TwinPower, inline six-cylinder or maybe each automaker will supply its own powerplants. Only time will tell. One thing is for sure, with BMW and Toyota partnered together, the future looks bright with the addition of two exciting sports cars.

Don’t ask us why that’s the case but something about that market really speaks to the Bavarian automaker. We’re admittedly jealous about this fact, more so now that another special-edition Bimmer — a Z4, no less! — is headed to the Asian. It’s called the BMW Z4 sDrive 20i GT Spirit and it looks downright gorgeous. The model is exclusively earmarked for the Japanese market as BMW’s way of celebrating the Sports Trophy team’s one-two finish in the Super GT series. Care to guess what car the team was racing in? Yep, a BMW Z4 GT3.

That’s the reason why BMW has allocated all 60 units of the Z4 sDrive 20i GT Spirit for Japan at a price of 6.090 million yen — close to $60,000 as of 7/8/2014. No other country will get these cars, which again is making us really jealous. Care to spare a few here in America, BMW? The list of modifications for this special-edition Z4 are limited to cosmetic upgrades, some of which actually pay homage to the Z4 GT3 race car. The White body is the same as the race car with the tri-color M graphics also making an appearance in the front section of the Z4.

Those are just the start of the exclusive touches given to this particular Z4. There’s plenty more in there that really brings out the best in this special-edition model. Built from a 2007 Z4 M Coupe by Fall-Line Motorsports, the track-ready vehicle replicates the official motor racing kit offered by BMW back in the day when the first-generation Z4 was still in production. The factory racing package was priced at $300,000 in 2006, aimed at customer teams, and was eligible for the events like the Nurburgring 24-Hour race or the German Endurance Championship. With minor tweaks, it could even been entered into the American Le Mans Series. The vehicle in question might be a replica, but don’t let that intimidate you, because it was developed by a team that has plenty of experience with the U.S.

Racing scene. In fact, the race-spec M Coupe has seen a great deal of track action before being serviced and listed for sale. Of course, it can’t be used in any contemporary racing series, but it can provide loads of weekend fun on any of the tracks across the United States. Back in 2013, BMW and Toyota signed an agreement that was supposed to bring only good things for both parties: a new supercar, improved hybrid-technologies and better cars. Well, the bad news is that this agreement will not affect the next-generation Supra, as it will remain an in-house-developed sports car.

What Toyota will do however will be to help BMW develop the next-generation Z4. The consensus believes that will design and build the body of the next Z4. Using lots of carbon-fiber and aluminum, while Toyota will offer its next-generation plug-in hybrid technology to the sports car.

Of course, this will not be the same as the current hybrid technology used in Toyota models, as that won’t fit in the tiny Z4. Instead, both the future Z4 and its Toyota cousin will likely share a sub-2.0-liter engine with a new, more compact hybrid system from Toyota. Despite heavy changes, it is believed that the next BMW Z4 will be priced similar to the current generation. Click past the jump to read more about the recently launched Toyota FT-1 Concept. The BMW M3 and the M4 Coupe are understandably getting all the attention today, but BMW is quick to point out that those aren’t the only two models that it’s proudly showcasing. A special-edition BMW Z4 is also getting some love ahead of its debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show.

The model is called the Pure Fusion Edition and while it lacks in any kind of noticeable exterior changes, it does showcase the company’s new Pure Fusion Design equipment package, which is all sorts of incredible if you’re the type to enjoy your luxury with plenty servings of sportiness to go with it. That, essentially, is what BMW is trying to sell with the Z4 Pure Fusion Design. You get your sports car in full blast and add a special interior that has more leather than you’d expect. Kudos to Bimmer for killing two birds with one stone.

The BMW Z4 lineup has remained change-free since its 2010 redesign, but this doesn’t mean tuners have lost interest in the 2014 Z4 roadster. MB Individual Cars from Augsburg, Germany is one tuner with plenty of interest in the Z4, and it developed a pretty bad-ass for the sports roadster. The kit is mad entirely from carbon fiber and is limited to only 25 units that will be released in early 2014. This Z4’s body is coated in a slick Mineral White, with the exposed carbon-fiber components that make up this kit. These components include the front spoiler lip, kidneys and air inlets, side-view mirrors, direction indicators, swords in the side sills, rear spoiler lip, rear diffuser insertion and some small swords for the lateral parts of the rear apron.

BMW’s illustrious history began during World War I when the now-successful luxury car-builder developed fighter aircraft-engine. At the end of the WWI it switched to developing motorcycles, then in 1929, bought its way into the car industry when it purchased the Dixi Car factory and started developing automobiles — some of its best were elegant roadsters. The first roadster to roll out of Bimmer’s factory was the 315/1, which was based on the 315 saloon.

From here, things evolved to the 328, which was one of the most successful roadster ever developed by BM and won the Mille Miglia in many times and the 1939 24 Hours of Le Mans. After the WWII, BMW was in great trouble and it needed a car to rescue it, and BMW thought that car was the 507. It was indeed a great car, with one of the most gorgeous design languages in the era and a powerful engine under the hood. However, because of its high price — $10,500 — the 507 was almost responsible for putting the BMW into bankruptcy. Only 252 units were ever developed, despite BMW’s 5,000-units-per-year projection. Next BMW started to develop the Z series, with the Z1 being the first model. What is very cool about the Z1 is that the doors drop down into the door sills so you can drive it with no doors.

Next we had the Z3, Z8 and the current Z4. The black sheep of the family was the Z3, which never really looked or felt like a BMW. BMW has promised us the revised 2014 (2013 in the Euro market) BMW Z4 and its most anticipated version, the sDrive35is, sometime in the spring of 2013.

Well, spring has officially sprung and we have yet to hear a peep from BMW regarding this revised model. What’s more, the first 200 buyers to preorder it will get access to the car on the 17th, giving them a full week of drop-top-racing fun before everyone else.

BMW recently took to the famous Daytona Raceway to introduce their latest race car that will compete at the 2013 American Le Mans Series: the BMW Z4 GTE. Racing under the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, the Z4 GTE has some pretty high expectations to live up to.

After all, it’s predecessor, the M3 GT, was one of the most successful race cars to compete in recent ALMS history. It last won back in 2011 and only lost the title last year to the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R.

So with a year to stew over surrendering its crown to Chevy, BMW is raring to get the 2013 ALMS season started with the Z4 GTE. As expected, the racecar was built with racing regulations in mind, although if it performs the way its departed brethren used to, so there shouldn’t be any problems scoring some points and gaining some wins.

BMW and Toyota recently signed an agreement that will bring the two companies new fuel-efficient technologies and at least two new sports cars: a new-generation Z4 sports car for Bimmer and a new-generation Supra for its Japanese partner in crime. Rumors suggest that both the new Z4 and thenew Supra will be built on the same platform as the GT86 sports coupe. If these rumors turn out to be true, it will mean that the next Z4 will be a much more dynamic handling car than the current generation – not that the current generation is a slouch. It has been also rumored that BMW is preparing a new V-6 hybrid system that will deliver about 400 horsepower, which is pretty big boost over the current 335 horsepower delivered by the most powerful Z4 version: the sDrive35is.

The new generation BMW Z4 is set to be unveiled in late 2015 as a 2016 model, so we will find out in a few years. The Land Down Under is fixing to get an infusion of M awesomeness after BMW’s Australian division launched a series of limited-run M Sport models as part of the company’s 'Festival of M'.

That’s really great, made even more so by the fact that the M Sport lineup will feature a number of models, each coming with their own unique modifications. The biggest of the bunch is the X5 M Sport Limited Edition and Australia decked with a bevy of new components. The M Sport body kit is obviously fitted into the SUV, as was a chrome M Sport tailpipe finisher, bi-xenon headlights and a set of 20-inch M double spoke alloy wheels. Meanwhile, the interior is dressed up too, at least to a certain extent.

There’s the M leather-wrapped steering wheel with gearshift paddles and electric seats. Other components include a Navigation Professional package, an automatic tailgate, a rearview camera, voice control and anti-dazzle exterior mirrors.

This one isn’t exactly our cup of tea, at least compared to what the other M Sport limited edition models. The next two are the 5-Series and Z4, both of which will receive an M Sport package that includes an M Sport suspension, a new aero kit, a leather steering wheel, a set of bespoke 18-inch alloys, blue leather-piped velour floor mats, chrome-plated 'Limited Edition' door sill finishers, an anthracite headliner for the coupe, and blue-stitched upholstery. Now this is more like it. The mixture of aesthetic and aero upgrades is definitely right in our wheelhouse. If you can get aftermarket performance upgrades on that Z4, then you really have something there. Finally, the 1-Series and 3-Series Coupe and Convertible have received M Sport Plus packages, comprising of an aluminum glacier silver interior trim with glossy-black kidney grilles.

The 3er, in particular, also has new sport seats, black exterior mirror caps, and stainless steel foot pedals. If given a choice, we’re definitely rolling with the Z4 M Limited Edition.

Its program is comprehensive enough without being too tacky. Check out the price list of all M Limited Edition models after the jump. While we are all waiting for the next-generation Z4, it looks like BMW has slid in a refreshed version for the 2014 model year for good measure. The model has been caught testing in many times and now it will be making its world debut in January 2013 at the Detroit Auto Show.

BMW’s decision to update for the current generation Z4 Roadster shouldn’t be a big surprise to anyone. First, the current-gen Z4 has been on the market since 2009 and secondly, a final decision on a third-generation Z4 is still to be made.

Of course, the updates on the 2014 Z4 aren’t very impressive; in fact, the U.S. Market will be the only one not receiving the biggest update — a new entry-level model that features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine.

Other updates will be limited to the exterior, and will include updated LED headlights and two new set of wheels That’s pretty much it! Updated: This review has been updated with the official details, images and specs. Updated: BMW has unveiled two very cool video for their new Z4 Roadster set to be revealed in Detroit. The new video show the car in action, but also a few exterior and interior design elements. When BMW and Zagato teamed up to introduce the BMW Zagato Coupe at the 2012 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este a few months ago, nobody had any inkling that the two companies had more than just one project up their collective sleeves.

Needless to say, all of us were once again caught by surprise when BMW released a teaser photo of another concept collaboration with Zagato, which made its debut at the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d’ Elegance. We weren’t about to assume what this new concept would be, but we easily made out the image of a BMW roadster, which lead us to think it could be a roadster version of the Zagato Coupe we saw a few months ago. Well, we were right about it being a roadster version of the BMW Zagato, but what we weren’t expecting was for the new Roadster to carry many characteristics that were all its own. This isn’t just a drop-top version of the Zagato Coupe, this is a whole new level of awesomeness mixed with the superb styling characteristics of BMW and Zagato.

UPDATE: BMW has unveiled a new video featuring BMW’s Head of Design, Karim Habib, as he explains the design concept behind the Zagato Roadster. Hit the jump for full details on the BMW Zagato Roadster. While BMW is currently designing the next generation Z4, Japanese tuner Rowen gave updating the current generation a try. We don’t necessarily think it needs updating, but to each his own.

The updates for the BMW Z4 began with the exterior where the base element was carbon fiber. The kit consists of a new front bumper spoiler, side steps, a side carbon under flap, rear bumper spoiler, and wing all made of carbon fiber. A new set of wheels complete the look, while the rear of the vehicle gets a new titanium high performance exhaust system that weighs 28 lbs less than the standard exhaust. However, Rowen has yet to reveal if this new exhaust system will translate into any changes under the hood, but it is very possible.

On top of those changes, the package also includes a new LED reflector and a LED Z4 emblem to make it a bit more eye-catching. We brought the first details on the next generation BMW Z4 in the beginning of May 2012 and now British magazine, AutoCar, has put their investigative hats on to bring us even more news on the next Z4. The new details suggest that the next Z4 will be 'more agile, athletic and sportier to drive.' The most important change will be made to the bonnet which will be shorter than in the current model. This change can’t be too drastic, however, because US customers are very fond of this feature. BMW opted for this aerodynamic change because it is believed the longer bonnet inhibited fast driving.

The rest of the vehicle’s design will remain almost completely unchanged because BMW is adamant on keeping up the character of the Z4. In terms of power, the next-generation Z4 will benefit from the downsized, four-cylinder N20 engines launched last year in the current generation Z4. Such a decision makes us hope that the famous Z4 M version will make a comeback, even though officials have stated previously that a 'business case for an M version of the current car is too weak to justify such a model. ' Expect to see the next generation BMW Z4 launched in 2015. The BMW Z4 is a relatively young model on the market.

Its first generation was announced in 2002, and became a very successful model on the market thanks to its beautiful design language and its relatively cheaper price compared to other sports cars. At the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, BMW brought out the second generation Z4. And, next to a new design language and new engines, the E89 model came with big changes to the line-up: the coupe version was dropped and so was the previous M version. Instead, BMW offered a Z4 sDrive35is version - the most powerful Z4 currently available on the market. On the US market, the current Z4 line-up includes the Z4 sDrive28i, the Z4 sDrive35i, and the Z4 sDrive35is with prices ranging from $48,650 to $64,200.

In Europe, customers can also opt for the sDrive20i, sDrive23i, or sDrive30i. Hit the jump to read more about the BMW Z4 E89. Last week, we let you in on BMW’s newest creation, the Coupe, which is obviously based on the 2011 Z4 sDrive35is, sans the ragtop. At that time, we didn’t have any real engine news to give and the details are still pretty spotty at best. We have learned that the engine pumps out a rather impressive-for-its-size 400 horsepower, but that’s not even the most incredible part. The most impressive part of this Zagato concept is not its power or stunning looks. What draws us in is its impressive sound.

This beast does not sound like your typical, comfy. It actually sounds like a purebred racecar just looking for a little asphalt to lay some vulcanized rubber upon. We can now share this sound with you, thanks to a video from Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este of this fantastic Bimmer rolling up to the red judging mat.

One thing that we were waiting for while watching the video was for the driver to get a little randy and accidentally put a little too much foot into it and spray gravel all over the photographers. Thankfully, Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este hires only the most professional of folks to drive these display cars and no such thing happened. We are not too sure if we could have resisted the urge to put that 400-horsepower turbocharged beast and the agility of the trailing photographers to the test. And that is why we are not driving cars to the judging mat at these shows! Enjoy the above video and keep your fingers crossed that BMW will actually release this awesome machine. In the past few years, the BMW Z4 has been nearly forgotten. Practically no changes have been made to the sports car since the second generation was unveiled in December 2008, except for the addition of a new four-cylinder engine for the 2012 model year. Now, well-placed company insiders have confirmed that is working on a replacement for the Z4 and that it will be launched in 2015. The new Z4 will be more agile and sportier, but the exterior changes will be 'relatively modest in order to avoid alienating fans of the current sports car.' BMW plans to make the current hood a little shorter because they feel it inhibits fast driving.

However, it is not very sure how short the new hood will be because customers are pretty excited about this feature, especially here on the US market. The next Z4 will also carry the current four-cylinder N20 engines because they are lighter and offer a more favorable weight distribution.

The BMW Z4 GT3 is preparing for the 2012 season and BMW has promised that the model will be stronger than ever. Before the season starts, Dirk Adorf took the car for a test session at the Valencia’s 'Circuit de la Comunitat' to see if this was the case and he was deeply impressed. For the BMW Z4 GT3, the six-cylinder engine has been replaced with a 4.4-liter V8 engine mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. The model has also received an elongated bonnet, a long wheelbase, and the narrow wheel arches. Also, the car has received a steel body for better protection at high speeds, plus a safety cell made of sturdy steel tubing that’s welded into the body.

Is also offering lots of carbon fiber reinforced plastics elements for the front and rear wings, the bonnet, roof and fenders. The BMW Z4 GT3’s success on the track illustrates the outstanding mechanics behind a vehicle of its stature.

The only problem is, many of us won’t be able to get behind the wheel of the GT3 due to its racing nature. Or at least we thought. Simraceway is a company that offers FREE, real simulated racing with online competitions, using officially-licensed, exact replicas of existing vehicles. These models are built around a customized version of the isiMotor 2.5 physics engine, but the best part is the price.

Each model costs only 1/100,000th of the real vehicle’s price. That means that the previously mentioned Z4 GT3 costs $4.02 - an insignificant amount considering the real car price of more than $400,000.

Throw in another $11.95 and you’ll get any add-on car in the iRacing world. There are over 600 cars to test (many of which have not been released yet) and all of them have been tested with the help of professional race drivers, world-champion sim racers, and the chief instructor of Simraceway Performance Driving Center. Everything from the car’s paint to the engine’s sound will make you think you are behind the wheel of the real thing. We know it isn’t exactly the same thing, but it’s the closest we’re ever going to get to the real thing! Anabolicar Magazine is one of Germany’s biggest supercar magazines so obviously, they had to have a presence at the just finished 2011 Essen Motor Show. What we didn’t know was that they were bringing a humdinger of a project in the form of a tuned-up BMW Z4. The show car, which was built specifically for the purpose of displaying it at Essen, comes with plenty of aerodynamic and performance enhancements that compliments the M Package the car already has.

The exterior of the Z4 is highlighted by a Green reptile skin finish that was worked on by KK-Cocoon. In addition to that, the Z4 Anabolicar also has a new KW coil-over suspension, an Eisenmann exhaust system, a lowered M-chassis, and a new set of black, 19' OZ Racing alloy wheels. Meanwhile, the modifications for the interior include new M sports seats, a new M steering wheel, and a voice activated navigation system. Under the hood of the Z4 Anabolicar lies a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine that produces 265 horsepower. All that juice wrapped up in a fancy aesthetic dress results in a sports car that stole the show at the 2011 Essen Motor Show. Then again, we really shouldn’t have expected anything less from one of Germany’s biggest supercar magazines. BMW has chosen the British market to launch two new models for the Z4 line-up.

The new Z4 sDrive20i and Z4 sDrive28i continue a tradition of over 80 years started by the 3/15 PA Wartburg Roadster back in 1930. It was a memorable car thanks to its setback glasshouse and front engine rear-wheel-drive configuration with the two seats positioned close to the rear axle.

The Z4 sDrive20i is powered by a four-cylinder engine with an output of 184 HP and 199 lb-ft of torque. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds and can hit a top speed of 146 mph. For the sDrive28i, the total output has been increased to 245 HP. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, while top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The Z4 sDrive20i will be offered in Space Grey metallic paintwork and will be equipped with 17' light alloy Star-spoke style 290 wheels and is priced at £29,480.00 ($40,172 at the current rates). The sDrive28i gets a Black Sapphire metallic paintwork with 18' Star-spoke style 325M light alloy wheels and is priced at £33,645.00 ($45,848 at the current rates). SR Auto Group impressed us with lots of impressive tuning package lately. If you remember just recently we have reported about the Project Deathbolt and the Project Veneto. And today its time to talk about the Project Flashbang based on the BMW Z4. The drawing board for Project Flashbang was filled with an abundance of ideas but in the end the tuner decided to go with what felt natural.

SR Group is usually a tuner that modifies the least as possible. But with the Z4 they did a little bit more: they have added an AC Schnitzer front aero lip, a new front bumper, a two piece lip spoiler and a rear with a sharper edge. The package continues with a new set of wheels from Modulare. The B11 model was finished with a gunmetal tint face and gloss black windows. Completing the package was a set of H&R lowering springs. The Chinese market is well on its way to become the biggest automotive market in the world, so it’s not at all surprising that automakers are sending them special editions by the boatload. BMW sent them the beautiful M3 Tiger Edition last year, and this year they are bringing the special Z4 sDrive23i Flame Edition.

The Flame Edition gets its name from the special desert yellow metallic paint on the exterior. This color was inspired by the Art desert located in the central west coast of South America. Combined with a new set of 17-inch alloy wheels, this paint provides the Z4 with a dynamic and elegant appearance. The incredible exterior look is highlighted by the elegant touches in the interior. The special BMW Z4 sDrive23i Flame Edition features Alcantara / Nappa leather combined with yellow stitching, a yellow center console, and Alcantara trim for the doors and the center panels. Is also offering a personalized version of the piano black trim to provide the Flame Edition with an even cleaner look. Special edition trims are nothing new for BMW, but it’s still worth noting considering just how extensive the brand is, especially here in America.

With the 2012 BMW Z4, BMW is looking into raising the awareness and interest for their sports roadster. The company has decided to do away with their previous packages - the Exclusive Ivory White Leather Package being one of them - in lieu of introducing an all-new aesthetic package called the Exclusive Canyon Brown Package. Available for the standard and the M Sport versions, the Exclusive Canyon Brown Package will feature plenty of new upgrades, including sport seats that come with an exclusive extended Merino leather upholstery with contrasting stitching. Meanwhile, the Z4’s upper dashboard is dressed in a Canyon Brown Oregon leather with contrasting stitching. The front lateral, center armrests, and the passenger-side dashboard come in black Nappa leather while the door handles come in black nappa leather and Fineline Antracite wood trim. For the Exclusive Canyon Brown M Sport Package, BMW is including more options for the Z4, including an adaptive M suspension, a set of Canyon Brown Extended Merino leather sport seats, an M sports steering wheel with paddle shifters, a new aerodynamic kit, an anthracite headliner, increased top speed limiter, and a set of 18' performance tire upgrades. As with all packages coming out of BMW, the new Exclusive Canyon Brown programs doesn’t come cheap.

For the sDrive35i model, the package retails for $5,050. For the four-cylinder sDrive28i, it’ll cost you $5,350. We’ve been having plenty of tuning programs for the BMW Z4 recently, including two projects done by Japan’s 3D Design, including the ’Z4 for North America’. Today, the BMW Z4 is once again front-and-center in the tuning world, only this time, the program comes courtesy of Kelleners Motorsport. Unlike the works made by 3D Design, which were largely based on aerodynamic improvements, Kelleners Motorsport offers the whole gamut of upgrades, including on the powertrain. With a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine already under the hood of the Z4, Kelleners Motorsport gave it a jolting boost, raising the sports car’s output from 335 horsepower and 332 lb/ft of torque all the way up to a mighty impressive 400 horsepower and 398 lb/ft of torque.

In addition to the engine improvements, Kelleners Motorsport also dressed up the Z4 with a set of 19' and 20' Hamburg or Berlin rims, as well as a lowered ride height by 20mm at the front and 10mm at the rear. Inside, there’s also a new three-spoke sport steering wheel, aluminum pedals, velour floor mats, and bespoke interior finishes in leather with wood trims that can be requested as a customer order. Japan has had more than its fair share of natural disasters over the years, with scientists predicting that a 'big' quake was bound to hit some time soon.

That being said, no one could predict the massive 8.9 magnitude quake followed by the tsunami that recently struck the country. The footage was a sight that was horrifying to watch, but even more so to live through. Japanese companies are still struggling to regain their balance, but 3D Design is out to prove that the country will not just sit back and allow negative things to happen to them. They are out to make positive things happen for themselves. This realization is what made 3D Design, along with a number of Japanese and US tuning firms, create the BMW Z4 tuning package that illustrates that hope and determination. The BMW Z4 by 3D Design by a number of players who contributed the many different elements of the vehicle.

The overall design theme was worked on by WSTO and IND with 18' wheels from BBS inspired by the BMW’s M3 GT4 program and wrapped around Yokohama tires, size 235/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rear. The exterior of the vehicle is transformed by 3D Design’s own aggressive, full carbon fiber aerodynamic package. The inner workings of the vehicle were also changed with an upgraded turbo kit from ESS, a KW variant suspension system, and a handbuilt exhaust system from Eisenmann. Other features include a Dinan camber plate, an upgraded brake package from Brembo, and a gauge package from Stack.

The most inspirational aspect of the vehicle is emblazoned on the passenger side of the BMW Z4: 'Don’t give up, Tohoku.' I think it is clear that no one is giving up. In fact, they will end up being stronger than ever. You can’t say that the Japanese don’t know how to handle German machinery. Not when a Japanese aftermarket company can turn an already sporty BMW Z4 into a piece of tuning awesomeness. Gnarly, aggressive, and sexy all at the same time, 3D Design’s new race-inspired body kit for the Z4 speaks volumes on the level of skill the Japanese have for giving cars a fantastic styling makeover. Check out the new duds on this Z4, including a new front splitter, side skirt extensions, a new carbon fiber rear diffuser, a trunk-mounted spoiler, a set of 19' forged wheels, and stainless steel sport exhaust system with valves that provide the added thunder to the entire makeover.

Meanwhile, the interior also received a full gauge package that you can find just above the car’s gear lever. It’s an awesome package even if BMW’s sports roadster was left with its 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and top speed of 155 mph. It now has the look to justify its powerful, workhorse of an engine. Consider us mightily impressed. Just as BMW promised back in February, they have arrived at the 2011 New York Auto Show with the return of a 4-cylinder engine to the US line-up. The first vehicle to benefit from this new engine is the Z4 sDrive28i. This new model will go on sale this fall and will replace the Z4 sDrive30i (pictured).

The new 4-cylinder engine delivers a total of 240 HP at 5,000 rpm and a peak torque of 260 lb-ft at only 1,250 rpm. This power will allow 30% more torque than the inline-six engine and achieves 1,500 rpm earlier. The 4-cylinder engine features an all-aluminum crankcase and is lighter and more compact than a 6-cylinder engine. The turbocharger is a twin-scroll system.

The exhaust streams out in two separate pairs of cylinders, flowing through the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger, then circulating to the turbine wheel. The new Z4 sDrive28i will be offered with an eight speed automatic transmission and will offer a fuel efficiency gain of approximately 20% over the naturally aspirated engine it replaces. UPDATE 08/22/11: BMW has released a new promo video of the Z4 sDrive28i as its being driven around Grimes Canyon. If you ask us, the car looks great! In the year since BMW Motorsport launched the 2010 Z4 GT3, the race car has achieved great success in the GT3 class series, including a ground-breaking win at the 24 Hours earlier this year.

But despite the car’s competitiveness, BMW knew that it still needed a few improvements. So, the Bavarian automaker let loose and built the new and improved 2011 Z4 GT3 racer. According to BMW, the goal for the latest version of the Z4 GT3 racer is to primarily improve its aerodynamic efficiency to make it more competitive against its rivals in the GT3 class. Noticeable improvements done on the new version include an elongated bonnet, a long wheelbase, and the narrow wheel arches. The car was also given a steel body courtesy of the plant in Regensburg, Germany and a safety cell made of sturdy steel tubing that’s welded into the body.

Likewise, BMW made good use of carbon fiber reinforced plastics, dressing up the car with the strong yet lightweight material on the front and rear wings, the bonnet, roof, and fenders, among other components. Whereas the former came with a six-cylinder engine, the latter was given a more powerful 4.4-liter V8 engine mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. The car is now being sold to racing teams for €315,000, which is about $454,000 based on current exchange rates.

Now that the 2011 Geneva Motor Show has come and gone, it goes without saying that the event was arguably the biggest and most successful auto show since the 2009 IAAs in Frankfurt, Germany. Some might contend that, but as far as we’re concerned, its been a while since we had an auto show that has been as widely attended by almost all automakers in the world quite like what we saw in Geneva.

And while we may have been introduced to a lot of the cars that were launched in Geneva beforehand, there were still some models, mostly of the concept variety, that took us by surprise. Most of these models weren’t previewed before the event so when the Geneva Motor Show opened its doors, just about everybody in attendance and those keeping tabs over the Web didn’t see these cars coming. But now that they’re here, we can take a look at the models that made the 2011 Geneva Motor Show that much more interesting. Check out the list after the jump. After their last one-off project - the golf club-inspired BMW Z4 ‘Slingshot’, which received great acclaim - it seemed like it was just a matter of time before the people of MWDesign Technik would return for yet another tasty dishing of a one-off BMW Z4.

Apparently, these guys are true to their word. Inspired by the work done on the Slingshot Z4, a client of MWDesign requested the tuning firm to work their magic on his brand new BMW Z4. Not one to turn down an opportunity, the boys from MWDesign took the offer and began working their magic. Just like the “Slingshot” Z4, the BMW Z4 “White Flame” draws inspiration from another golf club, the Taylormade R-11 driver. In designing the car, MW Design made sure that it translated some of the key design cues and coloration of the club into the car. Seeing as the R-11 features a white, red, and gray theme, MWDesign decided to put in the same color scheme in the Z4, albeit in a subtle fashion to maintain the car’s sleek and clean look.

Details on the BMW Z4 White Flame after the jump. Next to the impressive Vision ConnectDrive concept, BMW has also revealed an impressive package for the Z4 at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Called Design Pure Balance, the new equipment package comes with striking interior and exterior options, and will go on sale in the summer of 2011. The BMW Z4 Design Pure Balance is painted in a Mineral White metallic finish offered exclusively for this package.

This color offers fine metallic pigmentation for a brilliant impression. However, if the white metallic hue doesn’t tickle your fancy, the new package can also be combined with other non-metallic and metallic exterior paint finishes. Typically, a white exterior look is combined with a black interior, but BMW has gone against the grain with Cohiba Brown leather contrasted by White stitching for the seats and the same Cohiba Brown for the dashboard. Black isn’t far behind, though, as the rest of the leather trimmed elements are found in black with Umbra seams.

Fineline Anthracite wood and sports seats come standard with the package. With a name like Design Pure Balance, there is no way BMW would think to touch the inner mechanical workings of the Z4. That leaves us with the standard 3.0L I-6 engine producing 255hp and 220 lb-ft of torque. Now if only the BMW Z4 Design Pure Balance came with Cohiba brand premium cigars. Then we’d be in business! The Geneva Motor Show is ready to crack itself open in just a few hours, but AC Schnitzer has decided to release some details on its line-up for Switzerland a little early.

The first package from the German tuner is called the Z4 99d and uses a diesel engine that delivers 190 HP and 420 NM of torque. With this amount of power, plus a weight reduction of 230 kilos (507 lbs.), the tuner has managed to obtain a 0 to 60 mph sprint time of just 6.9 seconds, while top speed is 146 mph. This performance is accompanied by a fuel consumption of 3.8 liter diesel per 100 kilometers and a CO2 emission of just 99.18 g/km. AC Schnitzer also spent some time on the exterior of the BMW Z4 with an interesting paint job. We don’t know just how we feel about the green, blue, and black swirl paint yet, but it may just fit the BMW nicely. The BMW Z4 may have waited seven years between its first and second generation, but the two-door roadster will be seeing a few updates come 2012 when its scheduled to get a minor facelift at its early age. As of now, there isn’t a lot of talk about exterior or interior updates, but the inner workings of the Z4 will surely get a dose of modernization with a new engine. The current US line-up for the Z4 includes three models: Z4 sDrive30i, Z4 sDrive35i, and Z4 sDrive35is. The entry level model is powered by a 3.0-liter, inline 6-cylinder engine that delivers 255 HP, but that will be changing next year when the six-cylinder engine is dropped in favor of a turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant. Has promised that this new engine will deliver the same amount of power as the engine it replaces. All that says to us is that the difference will be completely auditory as turbocharged engines always sounds better. This four cylinder is rumored to plant itself in the BMW 328i as well.

Now, in an attempt to make the BMW Z4 even faster, the tuner is offering the same SK Plus supercharger system for the sports roadster.

This system is available for the Z4 3.0i version and increases the engine’s output by a total of 55 HP. The result is an impressive 286 hp at 6,000 rpm and 345 Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. With the new supercharger, the Z4 will now sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Next to this system, G-Power is also offering a new set of 20' wheels, a “GZ4-RS” coil-over suspension with 9-way adjustable compression and rebound, and a rear sport silencer made from stainless steel. The price for the package is 2,500 euro and can also be applied to the BMW 3 Series E46.

However, if you are looking for some serious power then potential customers should also take a look at the Z4. This kit provides the roadster with 360 kicking ponies and strips away the top speed limiter. Really the preference between these two models comes down to customer preference.
