Within every genre of music there will eventually be a countermovement against what is popular in the moment. In 1997, a couple of artists came together in New York to form the alternative hip hop band as a way of rebelling against the conventions of popular music and creating a sound that is distinctive from the mainstream and, in the band’s opinion, superior to the music that had grabbed the airwaves and stymied creativity. Anti-Pop Consortium was formed in 1997 when High Priest, M. Sayyid, and producer Earl Blaize met at a poetry slam. The trio decided to form a group that would challenge the conventions of hip hop at the time and began to work on their music and offering their fans a new way of listening to hip hop. Even though their early self-releases were met with mixed reviews, they continued on and finally got a record deal in 2000. The band broke up in 2002 but their reunited in 2007 to once more to fashion their unique brand of music and to spread it to the world through their albums and through touring.
